Service Difficulty Reports, explained

Service Difficulty Reports are the FAA's running record of what actually breaks on aircraft in service — and one of the most useful, most misunderstood tools a buyer has. We hold 730,692 of them, filed since 1995. Here is how to use them without over-reading them.

What a Service Difficulty Report is

When a component fails or malfunctions in service, mechanics and operators can file a Service Difficulty Report (SDR) with the FAA describing the part, the system, and what went wrong. Aggregated across a fleet, SDRs are a field-failure map: they show which systems on a given type generate real-world trouble, in the field, over time — the kind of pattern no brochure and no seller will volunteer.

Filing is voluntary — read the bias, not just the count

The single most important thing to understand about SDRs is that filing is largely voluntary and skews toward commercial and professionally maintained operators. That has two consequences:

  • Absence is weak evidence. Few SDRs on a privately-flown type may mean the type is robust — or simply that its owners rarely file. A clean SDR record is encouraging, never proof.
  • The relative pattern is the signal. The raw totals understate reality across the board, so don't read them as a failure rate. What holds up is the relative weight: which systems get reported most on this type, compared to the others.

Two ways to use them

  • On the specific airframe. Any SDR filed against the exact registration you're buying is a documented failure event on that aircraft. Bring each one to the pre-buy and confirm it was resolved and recorded.
  • On the type. The systems most reported across the fleet — landing gear, engine, flight controls, and so on — tell your mechanic where to point the inspection first. Our model buyer's guides compute these most-reported systems per type straight from the raw reports.

The reused-registration trap (again)

SDRs are filed against an N-number, and U.S. registrations get reused. A report filed years ago against your tail number may belong to a completely different aircraft — an airliner or a business jet that carried the registration before your piston single ever did. Counted naively, those foreign reports inflate a type's numbers and can even push your pre-buy toward the wrong systems.

We reconcile every SDR against the aircraft model actually declared in the report, keep only the ones that match the type, and show how many we set aside as belonging to previous holders of the same N-numbers. That is why the system pattern in our guides points at the right airframe — and never tells you to "inspect the wings" on a helicopter because a jet once wore the tail number.

Search yourself: the FAA SDR system at sdrs.faa.gov, free — but do the model reconciliation, or the pattern will mislead you.

What SDRs can't tell you

SDRs describe reported failures — not how any specific aircraft was maintained, whether a known weak point was addressed on the airframe in front of you, or how well repairs were done. They point the flashlight; the logbooks and a physical pre-purchase inspection by a licensed A&P/IA are what actually read the aircraft.
