How to read FAA registry data

The FAA aircraft registry is free, public, and the foundation every other record hangs on — 307,278 aircraft are on it today. It is also easy to misread. Here is what each field actually means, and where the registry quietly misleads.

What the registry contains

Every U.S.-registered aircraft has a public record tied to its N-number: manufacturer, model and serial number; engine and, where applicable, propeller type; year built; the current registrant and their state; and the registration's status and key dates. It is a snapshot of who owns what, and since when — no more, no less.

Verify identity by serial number first

The N-number is a licence plate; the serial number is the airframe's permanent identity. This distinction is the whole game, because registrations get reused — a tail number can migrate from one airframe to another over the years. So before anything else:

  • The serial number on the data plate, in the logbooks, and in the registry must all agree. A mismatch is a stop-everything finding.
  • When you later search NTSB accidents or Service Difficulty Reports, reconcile them by serial, not by N-number — or you risk reading another aircraft's history. (Our reports do this automatically.)

Status and dates — read them literally

  • Registration status. It should be valid and current. An expired, pending or "in question" status is a paperwork problem you inherit at closing — and sometimes a symptom of a deeper title issue.
  • Certificate issue date. The issue date of the current registration certificate is the FAA's public marker of the last registration change. It is your first, rough clue to how long the seller has actually owned the aircraft — cross-check it against what they tell you.
  • Airworthiness date. Where present, it anchors the airframe's certification history. It is context, not a maintenance record.

Why owners' names are often masked — and why we mask them too

Many aircraft are registered to an LLC, a trust or a dealer rather than to a person — a normal, legal arrangement that also means the registrant name may tell you little about who actually flies the aircraft. The registry is public, but publishing private individuals' names and addresses is a different thing. What the registry leaves out

The biggest trap is treating the registry as a history. It is a snapshot: the FAA's bulk data publishes the current owner, not the chain of previous ones. It carries no maintenance record, no accident history, no lien or title search, and no airworthiness compliance. Reading those requires the other layers — the NTSB database, Service Difficulty Reports, airworthiness directives, and a reconstructed ownership history built from successive registry snapshots.
